Silicone additives are indispensable high-performance components in modern coatings, inks, and agrochemicals. Based on polymer molecular structure, they fall into three main categories: polyether-modified siloxane copolymers, trisiloxanes, and reactive silicone additives. 1. Polyether-Modified Siloxane Copolymers

If the polyether is predominantly polyethylene oxide (EO), the additive exhibits outstanding compatibility with waterborne coatings—sometimes even water solubility—enhancing wetting, flow, and leveling while maintaining gloss and recoatability. When polypropylene oxide (PO) dominates the polyether segment, the copolymer is better suited for solvent-based or high-solids coatings and inks, functioning as a flow and anti-crater leveling agent.
2. Trisiloxanes
Grafting polyether groups onto heptamethyltrisiloxane yields trisiloxane additives with unique properties. Known as “super-spreaders,” they dramatically reduce surface tension at extremely low concentrations, enabling exceptional wetting and spreading on solid surfaces—especially hydrophobic leaf cuticles. Trisiloxanes are widely used in agricultural adjuvants to maximize spray coverage and deposition uniformity on foliage. In waterborne coatings and inks, they also boost wetting efficiency, overcoming common surface defects like craters and fisheyes on low-energy substrates.
3. Reactive Silicone Additives
While most silicone additives function physically without participating in film formation, reactive types carry functional groups—typically hydroxyl or acrylic—that chemically bond with resins or crosslinkers. They become permanently incorporated into the coating network. This enables durable property modification, such as introducing hydrophobicity, weatherability, or flexibility, without the migration or exudation issues that conventional additives may experience over time.
